10 Challenges to Service

The “10 Challenges to Service” are an alternative approach to Veterans’ mental health, offering personalized mentorship and purpose-driven challenges to help veterans reconnect with themselves and their communities. These challenges tackle themes that are essential to a healthy, productive, and fulfilling life:

  • Goal Setting
  • Personal Relationships
  • Habits
  • Anger Management
  • Gratitude
  • Forgiveness

The Long Walk Home has over 30 trained mentors who are available seven days a week to guide veterans through the “10 Challenges to Service” and provide general support. All of our mentors are either veterans or have had military personnel eithers, making them empathetic to the various obstacles that a veteran might be facing.

Since their creation in 2020, the “10 Challenges to Service” have helped hundreds of veterans and military family members navigate the difficult transition from military to civilian life. With roughly 3,000 challenges completed, The Long Walk Home is dedicated to helping veterans rediscover a sense a purpose and embark on their next mission, one challenge at a time.

Community Events

At The Long Walk Home, our community events serve a powerful purpose: to help veterans reconnect with nature, with others, and most importantly, with themselves. These gatherings go far beyond recreation. Whether it’s rafting down a river, hiking through the wilderness, swimming with dolphins, throwing axes, or simply sharing laughter around a campfire, each experience is carefully crafted to support mental health and emotional healing.

Many veterans struggle in silence after service, feeling isolated or misunderstood. These events create a safe, welcoming space where they can let their guard down, meet others who “get it,” and rediscover joy and belonging. These events aren’t just an escape for a day or a weekend. They’re an opportunity to form lasting bonds, develop trust, and build a renewed sense of purpose, often for the first time in years.

Every handshake, every shared meal, every mile walked together helps stitch community back into the lives of those who served. These aren’t just one-time outings; they’re stepping stones toward long-term healing and lifelong friendship.
